Commemorative plaque to Joseph Brodsky

The initiative of placing the plaque came from the Fund of Socio-Cultural Initiatives, led by Svetlana Medvedeva, assisted by the Government of St. Petersburg and the mayor of Venice. On the 70th anniversary of poet’s birth and the 20th anniversary of the release of the eponymous essay on May, 21, 2009 a commemorative plaque has been located on the house where the poet stayed during his first visit to Italy.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by the wife of Russian third President Svetlana Medvedevа, Russian Culture Minister Aleksandr Avdeyev, Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Italy Aleksei Meshkov, Mayor of Venice Massimo Cacciari, as well as prominent people of culture of Italy and Russia, including actress Alla Demidova, pianist Boris Petrushansky, and poet Yevgeni Rein.
