Monument to Isaac Babel
Odessa, intersection of Rishelievska and Zhukovskoho streets
The monument is erected in Odessa, at the intersection of Rishelievska and Zhukovskoho streets on September, 4, 2011. The fundraising for the monument was initiated by Worldwide Club of Odessites.
A rolling wheel is situated near the figure of Babel. “Someone sees a tachanka wheel of ‘Red Cavalry’ in it, someone hears ‘Jobmaster enterprise Mendel Krik & sons’ vehicle wheels rolling on the cobblestones, someone imagines the wheel of history, which ground many human fates at that time”, George Frangulyan explained the composition.
Sculptor succeeded to send the sketch of the monument to the writer’s widow Antonina Pirozhkova. She saw the layout and said, “I am happy to have lived till this day…” It is a striking fact that she died exactly that day and hour when George Frangulyan began sculpting the life-size shape.
The entire complex stands on real Odessa pavement, as if raising the relief of old Odessa of Babel from the past.
The solemn ceremony was attended by writer’s daughter Lidiya, grandson Andrey and great-grandson Nikolay.
